How to measure your vertical jump from video

A clean side-on phone video is enough to estimate vertical jump height from flight time. The setup takes about two minutes, and every automatic result can be checked frame by frame.

  1. Set the phone side-on

    Prop the camera near hip height, 3–5 metres from the jump. A slight angle is fine; a moving handheld camera makes the floor and body motion harder to separate.

  2. Use the highest useful frame rate

    Record at 60 fps when available. A 60 fps frame lasts about 16.7 ms; 120 fps lasts 8.3 ms and 240 fps lasts 4.2 ms. Higher frame rate gives you more frames around toe-off and touchdown, but it does not remove technique error.

  3. Keep the full movement visible

    Include head and feet before takeoff, through the apex, and after landing. Leave visible floor around the shoes. Do not zoom, pan, or let another person cross in front.

  4. Jump and land consistently

    For a standing countermovement jump, start flat-footed and land with a similar leg and foot position. Pulling the knees up or reaching the feet toward the floor changes flight time and can inflate or reduce the estimate.

  5. Upload the original clip

    Trim to one attempt, but do not export a slow-motion playback file. Upload the original camera-roll video so its timestamps and true frame rate remain intact.

  6. Verify takeoff and landing

    Mark toe-off on the last frame with ground contact and touchdown on the first frame contact returns. Open the frame seeker after analysis and correct either event if the automatic marker missed.

What makes a result trustworthy?

Flight-time math is deterministic once the events are correct. The largest practical uncertainty is identifying contact in the video and performing the same jump protocol each time. Treat the automatic number as an estimate until you inspect its event frames and warnings.
