How do I test my vertical jump?

How high can I jump?

What is a good vertical jump?

A good vertical depends on age, sex, sport, training, and the test method. In Statistics Canada's force-plate countermovement-jump data, the median for ages 20–24 was 49.4 cm (19.4 in) for males and 31.8 cm (12.5 in) for females; approach and jump-and-reach results are not directly comparable.

How accurate is a video vertical jump test?

At 60 fps one frame is about 16.7 ms; at 240 fps it is about 4.2 ms, but timing resolution is not the same as total accuracy. Automatic contact detection can drift by multiple frames on messy clips, so treat it as an estimate and verify or correct the events in the frame seeker before trusting the number.

Do I need special equipment for a vert test?

No: any modern phone can check your vertical. Film side-on from 3–5 meters at 60 fps or higher (120 or 240 fps slow-mo capture is even tighter), keep your whole body in frame, and upload straight from the camera roll.

Does it work for a running approach jump?

Yes, flight time can estimate both standing and approach jumps, but compare each jump style only with the same style. Keep one jump per clip, stay visible from before takeoff through landing, and avoid tucking or reaching the feet down because landing position changes the estimate.
